The best items to buy at Costco this year include essentials like groceries, household goods, electronics, and seasonal items—each selected for their affordability and popularity among members.
Top Grocery Staples and Food Items
Costco is renowned for its extensive selection of bulk food and pantry essentials that help families save money over time. In 2023, some of the most sought-after grocery items include:
- Organic and Non-GMO Products: The store’s organic section continues to grow, featuring items like organic berries, greens, and grains. Kirkland Signature Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil remains a favorite for its quality and price.
- Meat and Seafood: Bulk packs of chicken breasts, pork, and beef are popular for meal prepping. The fresh Atlantic salmon and wild shrimp are also highly rated for quality and affordability.
- Snack and Pantry Items: Kirkland Signature nuts, granola bars, and trail mixes are cost-effective options for families. Additionally, Kirkland’s canned tomatoes, pasta, and rice are staples for quick meals.
- Bakery and Dairy: The bakery section offers fresh-baked bread, muffins, and croissants that are perfect for breakfast or snacks, while dairy items like large blocks of cheese and Greek yogurt provide bulk savings.
Buying in bulk from Costco not only reduces the per-unit cost but also minimizes frequent shopping trips, making it a practical choice for busy households.
Household and Personal Care Products
Costco’s vast selection of household essentials and personal care products makes it a popular shopping destination for families and individuals seeking quality at a lower price. In 2023, notable items include:
- Cleaning Supplies: Kirkland Signature’s multi-surface cleaners, laundry detergents, and disinfectant wipes are highly valued for their effectiveness and bulk pricing.
- Paper Products: Toilet paper, paper towels, and facial tissues from Kirkland Signature are among the most purchased items due to their durability and cost-efficiency.
- Personal Care Items: Bulk packs of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and skincare products from trusted brands are available at competitive prices. The store’s own Kirkland brand offers quality alternatives to more expensive name brands.
- Vitamins and Supplements: Costco offers a wide range of vitamins and supplements, often at a better price point than retail pharmacies, making health maintenance more affordable.
These products are especially appealing because they combine cost savings with high quality, often backed by customer reviews that emphasize their reliability and effectiveness.
Electronics and Seasonal Items
While Costco is primarily known for consumables and household goods, its electronics and seasonal sections are also worth exploring in 2023. These categories often feature significant discounts and exclusive deals:
- Electronics: Costco offers a curated selection of TVs, laptops, and smart home devices from top brands like Samsung, LG, and Apple. Members often find competitive pricing on popular models, along with extended warranties and return policies that add value.
- Appliances: Large appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air purifiers are available at discounted prices, often bundled with delivery and installation services.
- Seasonal Items: During spring and summer, outdoor furniture, grills, and gardening supplies are heavily discounted. In the fall and winter, holiday décor, gift sets, and winter apparel become attractive purchases.
Many shoppers appreciate Costco’s exclusive member discounts on electronics, especially during promotional events like Black Friday or seasonal sales, which can offer savings that surpass typical retail deals.
Myth Busting and Tips for Shopping at Costco
A common misconception is that only bulk items are worth buying at Costco. While bulk purchases are a hallmark, there are strategic ways to maximize savings and avoid waste:
- Plan Purchases: Make a shopping list aligned with your household needs to prevent overbuying or waste, especially for perishable goods.
- Compare Unit Prices: Always check the price per ounce, pound, or unit to ensure you’re getting the best deal, as larger packages aren’t always cheaper per item.
- Use the Costco App and Membership Perks: The app provides exclusive coupons, digital receipts, and early notifications of sales, helping you plan purchases better.
- Explore Kirkland Signature: Costco’s private label often offers comparable or superior quality at a lower price than name brands, making it a smart choice for many staples.
- Seasonal Shopping: Take advantage of seasonal sales for holiday décor, outdoor furniture, and apparel, which tend to be heavily discounted during off-peak times.
Additionally, many shoppers overlook the value of Costco services such as optical centers, pharmacy, and travel planning, which can provide further savings and convenience beyond product purchases.
In conclusion, the best things to buy at Costco in 2023 span a wide array of categories, from essential groceries and household supplies to electronics and seasonal items. By understanding the store’s strengths—bulk savings, quality Kirkland products, and exclusive deals—shoppers can maximize their value and make smarter purchasing decisions throughout the year.
