As of September 2021, Luffy has not achieved Gear 5 in either the One Piece anime or manga series. Fans and theorists have speculated on what this transformation might entail and how it could be attained.
First, let’s examine what Gear 4 is and how it came to be. During his battle with Doflamingo on Dressrosa, Luffy attained Gear 4 by inflating his body with air and compressing it using his muscles. This resulted in a highly powerful and agile form, but it put a tremendous amount of strain on Luffy’s body, leaving him exhausted and unable to fight for long periods of time.
Given that Gear 4 has such a significant drawback, some wonder why Luffy would even need a Gear 5. One theory is that he could develop a more refined version of Gear 4 that would reduce the strain on his body while maintaining the power boost. This would enable Luffy to fight for longer periods without depleting his energy and would make him an even more fearsome adversary.
Another possibility is that Luffy could discover an entirely new type of transformation. One idea is that he could achieve a form that harnesses the power of all three Haki types, including Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s Haki. This could produce a transformation that not only boosts Luffy’s strength but also enhances his Haki abilities, rendering him nearly unbeatable in combat.
It’s worth noting that, despite the numerous fan theories, there has been no official confirmation from One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda about the existence of Gear 5. Oda is known for his methodical approach to storytelling and character development, and he may not have yet decided whether or not to include Gear 5 in the series. Furthermore, Oda has mentioned in interviews that he seeks to maintain a reasonable balance in the power scaling of the series, and introducing too many overpowerful transformations could upset that balance.
To summarize, Luffy has not achieved Gear 5 as of September 2021, and while many fans and theorists have speculated on what it might entail, there has been no official confirmation from the series creator. Nonetheless, it’s possible that Gear 5 could make an appearance in the future, and it will be interesting to see what new abilities and powers Luffy will acquire on his journey to become the Pirate King.
