“Mashallah” is an Arabic phrase commonly used in Muslim cultures to express appreciation, gratitude, or admiration for something beautiful or wonderful. It is often used in response to hearing good news or seeing something beautiful, such as a newborn baby, a lovely view, or a stunning piece of artwork.
The literal meaning of “Mashallah” is “God has willed it” or “What God has willed.” It is a combination of two words: “Masha,” which is the past tense of “Yashaa” meaning to will or to wish, and “Allah,” which means God in Arabic. Therefore, “Mashallah” can be translated as “Whatever God has willed has come to pass,” and it is often used to acknowledge that beauty or goodness comes from God.
However, “Mashallah” does not directly translate to “beautiful.” Instead, it is a phrase used to express admiration for something beautiful or remarkable that is attributed to the will of God. The phrase is often used as a form of praise or appreciation, and it is commonly used in Islamic cultures as a way to avoid giving the impression of envy or jealousy.
In Islamic culture, it is believed that saying “Mashallah” protects the person or thing being admired from the evil eye, which is a superstitious belief that a person can cause harm or misfortune by admiring something too much or with too much envy. Saying “Mashallah” is believed to ward off the evil eye and protect the object of admiration.
