How does anemia affect your lips?

Anemia is a condition characterized by a low level of red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen to the body’s tissues, including the lips. Therefore, when the body is anemic, the lips may become pale or appear bluish, dry, and cracked. In severe cases, the lips may even become swollen, and the corners of the mouth may crack, which is known as angular cheilitis. Additionally, anemia may cause a feeling of fatigue, weakness, and dizziness, which can make it difficult to take care of oneself, including maintaining proper oral hygiene, which can exacerbate lip dryness and cracking. If you suspect you may have anemia, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
