As of today, a total of 12 astronauts have walked on the Moon. All of these lunar explorers participated in NASA’s Apollo program between 1969 and 1972, marking some of the most significant achievements in human space exploration.
The Apollo Program and Lunar Landings
The Apollo program, initiated by NASA in the early 1960s, aimed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth. It was driven by the Cold War space race rivalry with the Soviet Union and the desire to demonstrate technological and scientific prowess. Over the course of seven Apollo missions (Apollo 11 through Apollo 17), humans set foot on the lunar surface, with Apollo 13 famously experiencing a life-threatening malfunction that prevented a moon landing but still contributed valuable scientific data.
