The television series Lucifer has a total of six seasons. This popular show, based on characters created by Neil Gaiman for the comic book series The Sandman and later the spin-off comic Lucifer published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, originally aired on Fox before moving to Netflix.
Overview of Lucifer’s Seasons
The series premiered on Fox on January 25, 2016, and concluded its run on the network after three seasons. Due to its popularity on Netflix, the show was revived for an additional three seasons, which are often referred to as the “Netflix seasons.” As a result, Lucifer has a total of six seasons.
Details of the Seasons and Their Release
- Seasons 1-3 (Fox): These seasons aired from 2016 to 2018. They establish the premise of Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil who abandons Hell to live in Los Angeles, where he runs a nightclub and becomes a civilian consultant for the LAPD.
- Seasons 4-6 (Netflix): After cancellation by Fox, Netflix picked up the series. The fourth season was released in 2019, the fifth in 2020, and the sixth and final season in 2021. These seasons delve deeper into character development, celestial mythology, and complex story arcs.
Why the Series Ended and Its Impact
The decision to conclude Lucifer with its sixth season was announced by Netflix, with the creators stating that this would be the show’s final chapter. Fans widely appreciated the series’ conclusion, which aimed to provide a satisfying ending to Lucifer Morningstar’s journey. The show’s transition from Fox to Netflix is a notable example of how streaming platforms can revive and extend television series beyond their original broadcast life.
Common Questions and Misconceptions
One common misconception is that the series has more seasons than it actually does. While the initial seasons on Fox are often considered separate from the Netflix seasons, they are all part of the same overall series. Additionally, some fans might confuse the number of seasons with the number of episodes, but to clarify:
- There are 93 episodes across all six seasons.
- The first three seasons have a total of 57 episodes.
- The Netflix seasons (4-6) add 36 episodes.
This structure reflects the show’s evolution and the different production contexts between Fox and Netflix.
Summary
In summary, Lucifer has a total of six seasons—three aired on Fox and three on Netflix. Fans of the series can enjoy all six seasons across various platforms, with the final season wrapping up the storylines and character arcs established over the show’s run. Whether you’re new to the series or revisiting it, understanding its season structure helps in appreciating its full narrative scope and its journey from network TV to streaming success.
