The series began with The Purge in 2013, directed by James DeMonaco, who also penned the screenplay for most entries. The franchise has expanded to include a total of six movies, each exploring different aspects of the annual event known as “The Purge.” The films are known for their intense action, social commentary, and dystopian themes, making them a notable part of modern science fiction and horror cinema.

Additional Media and Spin-offs
Besides the main films, the franchise has also expanded into other media, most notably a television series titled The Purge, which aired for two seasons from 2018 to 2019. The series provides additional context and explores the societal consequences of The Purge in different locations, further enriching the universe established by the films.
While the movies form the core of the franchise, the existence of the TV series and potential future installments continue to develop the story and expand the universe, keeping fans engaged and curious about what comes next.
Common Questions and Misconceptions
A common question among fans and newcomers alike is whether there will be more Purge movies in the future. As of October 2023, no official announcements have been made regarding upcoming installments. However, given the franchise’s popularity and the ongoing interest in its dystopian themes, it remains a possibility that more films or spin-offs could be developed.
Another misconception is that the series is a single continuous story. In reality, while the films are interconnected and share a common universe, many of the movies can be viewed independently, as they focus on different characters and locations but are tied together by the overarching concept of The Purge.
Overall, the series’ six films have created a compelling universe that critically examines societal issues through the lens of horror and thriller genres. Fans and new viewers alike can explore the series in chronological order or by their preferred entry point, knowing there are six movies to watch as of now, with potential for more in the future.
