How old is bubblegum?

Bubblegum is a type of chewing gum that is known for its distinctive flavors, soft texture, and ability to create bubbles when chewed. The history of bubblegum dates back over a century, and its origins can be traced to various ancient civilizations and cultures.

How old is bubblegum

The concept of chewing gum has been around for thousands of years, with evidence of ancient civilizations like the Greeks, Mayans, and Native Americans using various natural substances for chewing. These substances included tree resin, bark, sweet grass, and other plant materials, which were often flavored with spices, fruits, or honey for added taste.

The modern form of bubblegum, however, can be traced back to the late 19th century in the United States. In 1869, a man named William F. Semple patented the first chewing gum made from rubber. This early form of gum was not very popular due to its unpleasant taste and tough texture, but it laid the foundation for the development of bubblegum as we know it today.

The breakthrough in creating a more palatable and chewable form of gum came in the late 1800s when a man named Thomas Adams, a former Mexican general, began experimenting with chicle, a natural gum extracted from the sapodilla tree found in Central America. Adams initially intended to use chicle as a material for producing tires but soon realized its potential as a chewing gum base.

In 1871, Adams patented a gum-making machine and began mass-producing chicle-based chewing gum, which he called “New York Gum.” The gum was sold in small chunks and was not flavored, but it became a hit due to its softer texture and improved taste compared to earlier rubber-based gums. This marked the beginning of the modern chewing gum industry, and Adams’ New York Gum set the stage for the development of bubblegum.

The first bubblegum as we know it today was introduced in the early 20th century. In 1906, a man named Frank Fleer, who worked for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company, invented a gum called Blibber-Blubber. Blibber-Blubber was made from a combination of chicle and corn syrup and was the first gum that could create bubbles when chewed. However, Blibber-Blubber was not very successful commercially due to its inconsistency in creating bubbles and its tendency to stick to surfaces.

It wasn’t until 1928 that bubblegum as we know it today was officially introduced to the market. A man named Walter Diemer, who worked for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company, accidentally stumbled upon the recipe for bubblegum while trying to improve the formula for Blibber-Blubber. Diemer’s new gum, called Dubble Bubble, was made from a blend of chicle, corn syrup, and flavorings, and it had an improved texture and flavor compared to earlier bubblegums. Dubble Bubble quickly became a hit, and it set the standard for bubblegum in terms of taste, texture, and ability to create bubbles.

Over the years, bubblegum has continued to evolve and gain popularity. In the 1940s, bubblegum became a staple treat for American soldiers during World War II, and it gained further popularity among children in the post-war era. In the 1950s, bubblegum was marketed with colorful packaging and trading cards, which made it even more appealing to young consumers.

In the 1960s and 1970s, bubblegum continued to evolve with the introduction of new flavors, such as grape, watermelon, and strawberry, and the use of synthetic gum bases, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate, which replaced chicle as the primary ingredient in many bubblegum brands
