Kratos is a fictional character from the video game series “God of War,” and his race or ethnicity is not explicitly stated within the games. As a result, there has been much debate and speculation among fans as to whether Kratos is black or white.
Kratos is depicted as a bald, muscular man with white skin in the early games in the series. However, in the most recent game, “God of War (2018),” Kratos is portrayed with a darker skin tone, leading some to speculate that he is of African or mixed-race descent.
There are several arguments on both sides of the debate as to whether Kratos is black or white. Those who believe that Kratos is a white point to his appearance in the early games, where he is portrayed with white skin. They argue that Kratos is a character inspired by Greek mythology, and therefore, he is intended to be portrayed as a white character.
On the other hand, those who believe that Kratos is a black point to his appearance in “God of War (2018),” where he is portrayed with a darker skin tone. They argue that the change in Kratos’ appearance is a deliberate decision by the game developers to portray him as a character of color.
It is important to note that the race or ethnicity of a fictional character is not always explicitly stated within their respective media. In cases where a character’s race is not stated, it is up to the interpretation of the viewer or reader. As such, the debate over Kratos’ race is largely a matter of personal interpretation.
However, it is worth considering the cultural and historical context of the character’s portrayal. “God of War” draws heavily from Greek mythology, which is rooted in ancient Greek culture. In ancient Greece, there was a prevalent belief in the superiority of white, male citizens, and a corresponding devaluation of women, people of color, and non-citizens. This context could inform the portrayal of Kratos as a white character, as it reflects the values of the culture from which he is drawn.
At the same time, it is also important to acknowledge that representation matters. In media, characters of color are often underrepresented, and when they are present, they are often portrayed in stereotypical or tokenistic ways. The decision to portray Kratos with a darker skin tone in the most recent game could be seen as a deliberate attempt to diversify the character and provide representation for players of color.
Ultimately, the debate over Kratos’ race is largely a matter of personal interpretation. However, it is important to consider the cultural and historical context of the character’s portrayal and the significance of representation in media. Regardless of Kratos’ race, he remains a beloved and iconic character in the video game industry, and his story and character development continue to captivate players around the world.
