What is the Longest Equation?

The concept of a “longest equation” is not well-defined, as equations can be as simple or as complex as necessary to solve a particular problem. However, there are some equations that are known for being particularly lengthy or complex, either due to their mathematical structure or the amount of computation required to solve them.

What is the Longest Equation?

One famous example of a lengthy equation is the quadratic formula, which is used to solve equations of the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0. The quadratic formula is given by:

x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 – 4ac)) / 2a

While this equation is not particularly long, it is often taught as a basic tool for solving quadratic equations, and is an important part of algebraic problem-solving.

Another well-known equation that is often cited for its length and complexity is the Navier-Stokes equation, which describes the motion of fluids in space and time. The Navier-Stokes equation is a set of partial differential equations that relate the rate of change of the velocity of a fluid to the pressure, density, and viscosity of the fluid, as well as any external forces acting on it.

The full Navier-Stokes equation is written as follows:

ρ ( ∂u/∂t + u ∂u/∂x + v ∂u/∂y + w ∂u/∂z ) = -∂p/∂x + μ ( ∂^2u/∂x^2 + ∂^2u/∂y^2 + ∂^2u/∂z^2 ) + f_x

ρ ( ∂v/∂t + u ∂v/∂x + v ∂v/∂y + w ∂v/∂z ) = -∂p/∂y + μ ( ∂^2v/∂x^2 + ∂^2v/∂y^2 + ∂^2v/∂z^2 ) + f_y

ρ ( ∂w/∂t + u ∂w/∂x + v ∂w/∂y + w ∂w/∂z ) = -∂p/∂z + μ ( ∂^2w/∂x^2 + ∂^2w/∂y^2 + ∂^2w/∂z^2 ) + f_z

This equation is notable for its complexity and for being one of the most important unsolved problems in mathematics and physics. Despite being used extensively in fields such as aerodynamics and fluid dynamics, a complete mathematical solution to the Navier-Stokes equation has yet to be found.

In recent years, a number of equations have been proposed as contenders for the title of “longest equation.” One such equation is the “Monster” equation, which was discovered in the study of a certain type of mathematical object known as a “von Neumann algebra.” The Monster equation has over 808,017,424,794,512 terms, making it one of the longest and most complex equations ever discovered.

Another example of a lengthy equation is the BBP formula, which is used to calculate the nth digit of pi without calculating the preceding digits. The BBP formula has over 10,000 terms, and requires a significant amount of computation to calculate even a single digit of pi.

Ultimately, the length and complexity of an equation depend on the problem it is intended to solve, and the mathematical tools and techniques used to derive it. While some equations are notable for their length and complexity, they are not necessarily more important or useful than simpler equations that solve specific problems.
