The cost of cigarettes can vary widely from state to state in the United States, due in part to differences in taxes and regulations. As a result, some states are considerably cheaper than others when it comes to purchasing cigarettes.
According to data from the Tax Foundation, as of January 2021, the state with the lowest cigarette tax rate in the United States is Missouri, with a tax rate of just 17 cents per pack. This makes Missouri the cheapest state to buy cigarettes in the US. Other states with relatively low cigarette tax rates include Virginia (30 cents per pack), North Dakota (44 cents per pack), and Wyoming (60 cents per pack).
However, it is important to note that the price of cigarettes in a given state is not solely determined by the tax rate. Other factors, such as the cost of living and the availability of tobacco products, can also influence the overall cost of cigarettes.
For example, although Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax rate in the country, the actual price of a pack of cigarettes can vary depending on where in the state you are buying them. In some areas of Missouri, a pack of cigarettes may cost as little as $4 or $5, while in other areas, the price may be closer to $7 or $8.
Similarly, while Virginia has a relatively low cigarette tax rate, the state is home to several large tobacco companies, which can influence the overall cost of cigarettes in the state. In addition, the cost of living in Virginia may be higher than in some other states, which can also impact the price of cigarettes.
Overall, while Missouri is generally considered to be the cheapest state to buy cigarettes in the United States, the actual price of cigarettes can vary depending on a variety of factors. It is important to keep in mind that smoking is an expensive habit regardless of where you live, and that the health risks associated with smoking far outweigh any potential cost savings.
