Ivar the Boneless was a renowned Viking warrior and leader who lived during the 9th century. He was the son of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok and was known for his tactical brilliance, cunning, and ferocity in battle. His leadership of the Great Heathen Army during the conquest of England and his significant role in the Battle of Edington that led to the establishment of Danelaw in England further cemented his status as a great commander. Despite his reputation as a fearsome warrior, his ultimate fate remains a mystery. There are numerous accounts of his death, and it is impossible to establish with certainty which one is accurate.
One of the most popular tales about Ivar’s death comes from the Icelandic sagas. According to this narrative, Ivar was killed by Olaf the White, the king of Dublin, who had been his rival for many years. They faced each other in a fierce battle near the River Drowse in Ireland. Despite his physical disability, Ivar fought valiantly, but Olaf eventually gained the upper hand and dealt a fatal blow with his sword. Before he died, Ivar cursed Olaf, prophesying that he would not have a long and peaceful reign.
Another account from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that Ivar died of natural causes in England in 870, a version supported by other historical sources like the Irish annals that recorded his demise in Dublin in 873. There are also numerous other stories and legends about Ivar’s death. Some assert that one of his own men killed him, while others claim that he died fighting against the English or the Irish.
It is unlikely that we will ever know for sure how Ivar the Boneless died. The various tales and legends about his death have been passed down over time, and it is challenging to distinguish fact from fiction. Nevertheless, it is evident that Ivar was a legendary figure in Viking history whose tales continue to fascinate people to this day.
