Who was the 1st cartoon?

The concept of cartoons, or animated drawings, has been around for centuries. The earliest recorded instances of animation date back to ancient Egypt, where drawings on pottery were discovered that depicted animals with multiple legs in various stages of movement. However, the first cartoon as we know it today, a short film with a narrative structure, was created in the late 19th century.

Who was the 1st cartoon?

The first person to create a cartoon with a storyline was a Frenchman named Émile Cohl. Cohl was a caricaturist and filmmaker who had worked on early films and advertisements. In 1908, he created a short film called “Fantasmagorie,” which is widely regarded as the first cartoon.

“Fantasmagorie” is a two-minute film that tells the story of a stick figure man who encounters various surreal objects and creatures, including a giant mouth and a dancing skeleton. The film was created using a technique called stop-motion animation, where individual drawings are photographed and played in sequence to create the illusion of movement. Cohl used over 700 individual drawings to create “Fantasmagorie,” and the result was a groundbreaking work that paved the way for the development of animation as an art form.

Cohl’s “Fantasmagorie” was not the first animated film, however. In 1892, American inventor Thomas Edison created a device called the kinetoscope, which allowed viewers to watch short films through a peephole. One of the first films created for the kinetoscope was a series of hand-drawn images of a dancing figure, created by Englishman William Dickson. While this film was not a narrative cartoon, it is often cited as the first animated film.

Another early example of animation is “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces,” created by American cartoonist J. Stuart Blackton in 1906. The film features Blackton drawing humorous faces on a chalkboard, which then come to life and interact with each other. While “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” is not a narrative cartoon, it is considered an important early work in the development of animation.

After “Fantasmagorie,” the field of animation rapidly developed, with cartoon shorts becoming a popular form of entertainment in the early 20th century. In the United States, cartoon characters such as Felix the Cat, Betty Boop, and Mickey Mouse became cultural icons, and animation studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. became major players in the entertainment industry.

In conclusion, while the concept of animation has been around for centuries, the first cartoon as we know it today was created by Émile Cohl in 1908 with his short film “Fantasmagorie.” This groundbreaking work paved the way for the development of animation as an art form, and cartoon shorts quickly became a popular form of entertainment in the early 20th century.
