Why can’t energy be destroyed?

Energy is a fundamental quantity in physics that is associated with the ability of a system to perform work. It exists in many forms, such as kinetic energy, thermal energy, electrical energy, and so on. One of the fundamental principles of physics is the conservation of energy, which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.

Why can't energy be destroyed?

The conservation of energy is based on the laws of thermodynamics, which describe how energy behaves in different systems. The first law of thermodynamics, also known as the law of conservation of energy, states that the total energy of a closed system is constant. In other words, the energy of a system can be converted from one form to another, but the total amount of energy in the system remains the same.

This principle is based on the fact that energy is a fundamental property of the universe and cannot be created or destroyed. This is known as the principle of the conservation of mass-energy, which states that the total amount of mass-energy in a closed system is conserved.

One way to understand this is to consider the example of a ball rolling down a hill. As the ball rolls down the hill, it gains kinetic energy. This energy can be converted to thermal energy as the ball comes to a stop at the bottom of the hill. However, the total amount of energy in the system remains constant, as none of the energy has been destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.

Another example is the conversion of electrical energy to light energy in a light bulb. The electrical energy is transformed into light energy, but the total amount of energy in the system remains the same.

The conservation of energy is a fundamental principle of physics that has many practical applications. It is used in many fields, such as engineering, physics, and chemistry. For example, the efficiency of engines is based on the principle of conservation of energy. The amount of energy input into an engine is equal to the amount of useful work output, plus any energy lost to the surroundings as heat or other forms of waste.

In conclusion, energy cannot be destroyed because it is a fundamental property of the universe. The principle of the conservation of mass-energy states that the total amount of mass-energy in a closed system is conserved, which means that energy can be converted from one form to another, but the total amount of energy in the system remains the same. This principle is based on the laws of thermodynamics and is a fundamental principle of physics that has many practical applications.
