Why can’t Mormons drink coffee?

Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and their religious beliefs and practices are guided by their interpretation of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other sacred texts. One of the practices that is often misunderstood by outsiders is their avoidance of coffee and other caffeinated beverages. Here are some possible reasons why Mormons do not drink coffee:

  1. The Word of Wisdom: The Word of Wisdom is a section of the Doctrine and Covenants, a book of scripture unique to Mormonism. This section of the text was revealed to Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, in 1833, and contains a list of guidelines for healthy living. Among the instructions are prohibitions against tobacco, alcohol, and “hot drinks.” The interpretation of “hot drinks” has evolved over time, but in modern practice, it is generally understood to mean coffee and tea.
  2. Health Benefits: The Word of Wisdom was not just a spiritual revelation, but also contained practical advice for healthy living. The avoidance of tobacco and alcohol is now widely recognized as a wise choice for overall health, and some Mormons argue that the avoidance of coffee and tea can also have health benefits. For example, some studies suggest that caffeine can contribute to anxiety and insomnia, so avoiding it may promote better sleep and mental health.
  3. Avoiding Addictions: Mormons are often praised for their self-control and discipline, and some believe that avoiding coffee and other substances can help them maintain their willpower. This is consistent with the idea that the Word of Wisdom was not just a list of prohibitions, but a call to live a healthy and balanced life. By avoiding substances that might lead to addiction or unhealthy habits, Mormons can focus on their spiritual and personal development.
  4. Cultural Norms: The avoidance of coffee and tea has become an important part of Mormon culture, and many members are proud of their ability to resist the temptation to consume these beverages. This cultural norm is reinforced by social pressure, as well as by the practice of offering non-caffeinated beverages at church functions and other gatherings.
  5. Obedience to Church Leaders: Finally, some Mormons may simply avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages out of a sense of obedience to their church leaders. The Word of Wisdom is considered a commandment, and while the interpretation of the text may be debated, there is a strong tradition of following the guidance of church leaders on matters of doctrine and practice.

In conclusion, there are several possible reasons why Mormons do not drink coffee. These include the guidance of the Word of Wisdom, potential health benefits, the desire to avoid addiction, cultural norms, and obedience to church leaders. While the practice may seem strange or arbitrary to outsiders, for Mormons it is a meaningful part of their religious identity and a way of demonstrating their commitment to their faith.
