Johnny Depp, who played the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the previous two Fantastic Beasts movies, will not be appearing in the upcoming film “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.” The decision to replace Depp with Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald has been the subject of much speculation and controversy.
The primary reason for Depp’s absence from “The Secrets of Dumbledore” is his ongoing legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. In 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp, alleging that he had physically and emotionally abused her throughout their relationship. Depp denied the allegations, and the case went to trial in 2020.
During the trial, both Depp and Heard testified about their relationship and made allegations against each other. In November 2020, the court ruled in favor of the publishers of a British tabloid that had referred to Depp as a “wife-beater” in an article about the case. Depp subsequently announced that he would be stepping down from his role in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise at the request of Warner Bros.
Depp’s departure from the franchise was met with mixed reactions from fans and the media. Some argued that Depp had been unfairly treated by the court and that he should be allowed to continue in his role as Grindelwald. Others pointed out that the allegations against Depp were serious and that his continued involvement in the franchise could send the wrong message about domestic violence.
In response to the controversy, Warner Bros. issued a statement in which they expressed their support for the victims of domestic violence and announced that they would be recasting the role of Grindelwald for “The Secrets of Dumbledore.” In November 2020, it was announced that Mads Mikkelsen would be taking over the role.
The decision to recast the role of Grindelwald was not an easy one for Warner Bros. or for fans of the franchise. Depp had already appeared in two movies as the character and had been heavily involved in the development of the character’s backstory and motivations. Mikkelsen, on the other hand, would be coming in to the role mid-franchise and would have to find a way to make the character his own.
Despite the challenges of the recasting, fans of the franchise seem to be excited to see Mikkelsen take on the role of Grindelwald. Mikkelsen is a well-respected actor with a long list of credits to his name, including roles in “Hannibal,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Casino Royale.” He is known for his ability to play complex and nuanced characters, and many fans are looking forward to seeing what he will bring to the role of Grindelwald.
In conclusion, Johnny Depp will not be appearing in “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” due to his ongoing legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. The decision to recast the role of Grindelwald was made by Warner Bros. in response to the allegations against Depp and in support of the victims of domestic violence. Mads Mikkelsen will be taking over the role of Grindelwald in the upcoming film, and fans of the franchise are looking forward to seeing what he will bring to the role.
